Several major hand hygiene compliance programmes have been developed and made publicly available, e.g. from the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
In 2009 WHO launched a global campaign called SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands to improve hand hygiene amongst health care workers. It is a major component of the First Global Patient Safety Challenge: Clean Care is Safer Care initiative which was started in 2005 (WHO 2013). Based on these initiatives the WHO published amongst other tools Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care (WHO 2009a) and a guide to the implementation of the WHO multimodal hand hygiene improvement strategy (WHO 2009b).
