GOP Description
Implementation level
Clinical settings
All dental health-care settings in Catalonia
Implementing patient safety in dental health-care settings and promote all kinds of improvements in the system with sufficient scientific basis to minimize the risks associated with dentistry
All dental health-care personnel (professional and nonprofessional)
Any healthcare activity is always can be improved from the perspective of patient safety, that is, reduce and prevent risks associated with healthcare. In Catalonia, approximately 37.5% (3,000/8,000) of the authorized health centers correspond to ambulatory dental health-care settings. The impact on health care and the risk to patient safety is important.
For this reason, the Ministry of Health of the Government of Catalonia in 2012 began a project to promote patient safety in dental health-care settings.
One of the lines of this project is developing and implementing strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections in dental health-care settings. The actions that are carried out are training of all actors involved in the healthcare process and developing a document based on scientific evidence of infection prevention at the dental center.
A review of the scientific evidence was carried out to September 2015 searching the main biomedical databases, of the developing the document. Clinical practice guidelines, meta-analysis and systematic reviews were selected. Finally, different sources of useful information for the study of the local context (epidemiological data, routine clinical practice, legal aspects etc.) were consulted.
Timeframe implementation
We conducted two editions 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 of classroom training and a total of 40 training sessions in small groups.
This year (2015-2016) is being conducted the third edition of classroom course.
Implementation tools available
Plan training in Patient Safety.
Developing a control programs infections.
Implementation cost
Method used to measure the results
•The level of satisfaction is measured using a survey.
•The number of professionals who pass the exam with a score greater than or equal to 80%
•Management audits of compliance with control programs infections in the ambulatory dental health-care settings
The purpose of this document is to provide information to dental health-care personnel to prevent transmission of disease by promoting a safe working environment and to assist dental health-care settings in the development and implementation of control programs infections.
This document addresses issues such as:
o Standard precautions and transmission-based precautions
o Hand hygiene
o Antiseptics and disinfectants
o Cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of dental equipment
o Cleaning and disinfection of dental centers
o Contamination control of the dental unit waterlines
o Oral surgical procedures
o Other prevention measures
o Antibiotic prophylaxis and dentistry
o Recommendations according to the evidence.
Analysis of the results
Currently, they have made this course 46% of dentists and stomatologists holders of ambulatory dental health-care settings. Now it is in the process of editing and translation into different languages. Its publication is planned at the end of 2015 on the website of Patient Safety of the Ministry of Health of the Government of Catalonia (http://seguretatdelspacients.gencat.cat ).
Implementation barriers
Did you find implementation barriers?
Please describe implementation barriers
Lack of safety culture and participation in making as assumption in many cases care assistance.
Resistance to change.
Economic crisis.
Great nomber of dental health-care settings.
Describe the strategies used to overcome the barriers (If needed)
Plan training in Patient Safety and strategies to reduce and prevent risks associated with in dental health-care settings:
– Prevent healthcare-associated infections in dental health-care settings
– Reduce and prevent risks associated with surgical/invasive procedures in dental health-care settings
