Short description

The Italian Ministry of Health produced and released a video to better explain how to use and how not to use the checklist in the operating room. This video is made up of three distinct parts. The first one shows a simple case, the second one a complex case and the last part shows how not to use the checklist. All the characters are health professionals in real life. The language is Italian with subtitles in English. This video is available on "You Tube" searching for the key word "checklist chirurgia".

Target audience

all the health professionals involved in surgery procedures, and health managers

Applicability (setting e.g. inpatient care, outpatient care, long term care etc.)

inpatient care, clinical surgery.

Information on how the tool has been applied/tested in practice

The MoH published the video and after an official presentation it was on the first page of the web site.
The video was shown during an important meeting on Patient Safety: VI "Forum Risk Management in Health care" Arezzo 2011.
Monitoring the checklist use has shown a progressive increase of this tool in surgical settings.

Needed resources (financial, material, human)

It didn't require a great amount of money because we ask the healthcare professionals for  their collaboration. It was made in collaboration with Regions and Healthcare Organizations.
The availability of the WHO video, or other organizations,  is a useful base for the production of a similar video.

Needed time for implementation

It took six months to design and release the video. After this the MoH decided to disseminate it using the most important TV channels and TV news.

Strengths and limitations

The strengths are the impact of the video, simple to understand and to remember, above all the third part on "How not to use the checklist" is interesting and impactful for the viewer.
