Short description

Dutch version of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist

Target audience

operation theatre personnel (anaesthesiologists, surgeons, operation nurses)

Applicability (setting e.g. inpatient care, outpatient care, long term care etc.)

all surgery patients

Information on how the tool has been applied/tested in practice

Started with procedures of 3 surgeons, step by step (plastic surgery, abdominal surgery, urology). 1,5 years later expanded to all procedures of all surgeons. Monthly compliance measurement through check of patient files after discharge.

Needed resources (financial, material, human)

Posters, information sessions, time for convincing doctors, printing paper checklists, reforming the patient's operation file to embed the SSC.

Needed time for implementation

Tool is compulsory for every surgical procedure, but still not used by every surgeon in every procedure. The implementation is still not completed.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths: Simple, easy, quick to do.
Limitations: Checklists are not embedded in the culture of surgeons, the 3 'time-outs' are no sharp moments during the whole procedure from installing the patient to transporting the patient to the recovery room.
