Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice
|
|
Healthcare associated infections and the spread of pathogenic microorganisms (alert organisms) in hospital and local healthcare organizations, at the National and Local level, are important and increasing risk factors with high clinical, economic and human impact. Thus, the Local Health Autority of Pescara, with a view to improving strategies for infection prevention and control, promoted implementation of a procedure for reporting infection/colonization by sentinel microorganisms and a protocol for continuous epidemiological surveillance on infections, sentinel microorganisms and antibiotic resistance.
|
Description of the Patient Safety Practice
|
|
The procedure implemented concerns reporting of Alert microorganisms by both, the laboratory of microbiology and the operative units, through filling in a specific form with the aim of informing the epidemiological group about the microbiological data. This is followed by an inspection by the Epidemiological Group in the operative unit concerned to verify the conditions of the patient and the prevention measures implemented. Once the data are collected the Epidemiological Group carries out a series of "safety and Infection control walkaround" to assess:
- availability of materials and devices required to manage cases of inferction;
- implementation of precautionary measures to be adopted by the healthcare staff.
The specify objectives achieved through the practice are:
1. to promptly identify cases of infection that require timely and targeted intervention to limit its spread;
2. early detection of sentinel pathogens to prevent their spread in Local Health Authority of Pescara;
3 to ensure a rapid response of the Epidemiological Operations Group (GOE), in UO / Departments concerned for the implementation of revention and control measures
4. to unify and standardize the procedures for reporting known or suspected nosocomial infection
5. to store and process data related to infection
The novelty of the practice is the integrated approach to infection control activities
promote awareness of risk factors potentially hazardous to public health.
