Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

This safety practice aims at improving the problem of the administration of blood products at home without the presence of the doctor. Expected benefits are: - improvement in patient compliance to therapy - improvement in psychological well-being of patient, - rationalization of resources, de-hospitalization, - increased collaboration with physicians
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

Blood products are considered as medicines extracted from the plasma through industrial processing. These include, for example, albumin, clotting factors, immunoglobulins. The appropriateness of therapy with albumin is regulated by specific laws that limitate its use. There is however an area of uncertainty regarding procedures and possibility of administration outside hospital settings, especially at home for patients with low autonomy because of serious illnesses. That is the reason why we have been developing a procedure that allows administration of albumin at patient's house carried out by nurses after attending a training course at the Blood Transfusion Service and following the instructions and limitations of the procedure.
