Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

Mortality and complications of non-cardiac surgery are still a major problem worldwide. Therefore the WHO and other health care authorities including the Italian government have introduced the project "safe surgery saves lifes".
This patient safety practice aims at reducing the perioperative risk of patients scheduled for both elective and urgent surgery. The principal aim of the project is the implementation of the local adaptation of the surgical safety checklist and the monitoring of this process.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

Within the entire region of South Tyrol, Italy, the checklist is implemented in all the operating theatre centres belonging to the public health since 2010, thanks to an initiative of the regional health authorities. Here, we report the experience of the Central Hospital of Bolzano with the implementation and monitoring of the level of implementation and compliance of the surgical teams.
Implementation of the surgical checklist was supported by a form to be filled in to verify proper implementation and compliance by healthcare workers.
In addition, we have developed and implemented additional types of checklists adapted to the peculiarities of day surgery and C-section processes.
Furthermore, a verification sheet including both the assessment of the proper implementation of every single item of the checklist, and the verification of certain behaviours and critical factors during the perioperative pathway. All the sheets are checked regularly.
The results of these checks are discussed by the staff of the surgical department at monthly intervals and then sent to the surgical specialities as a feedback.
