Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

APOTECA is an automation system for hospitals, organizing and managing the flow of information, activities, materials and resources. It was born from a need felt in the oncology field, where the integration of materials, information and work has taken the utmost importance: the oncologist, the pharmacist and their staff become a team around the patient to ensure the highest quality, safety and efficiency in a constantly expanding health care area. The rising diffusion of cancer typologies and the introduction of new drugs make the system more complex.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

The project was divided into the following phases: 1. installation of the APOTECAchemo system within the preparation of antiblastic drugs unit; 2. clinical validation of the system with particular reference to the aspects most related to safety (performance, precision and accuracy, air handling system, chemical and microbiological contamination); 3. system implementation in the daily clinical practice and continuous development through constant collaboration among hospital staff and technical staff; 4 analysis, re-engineering of processes related to delivery of cancer therapy, development of a computer-based tool integrated with APOTECA; 5. Evaluation of results.
