Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

The overall aim of this practice is to prevent hospital acquired infections through the appropriate choice of antiseptics and disinfectant products. Specific aims are:
- To inform about the correct methods for antisepsis and disinfection
- To standardize knowledge, behavior and procedures among health professionals
- Provide professionals with a comprehensive handbook about the disinfectant products, hot to use them, their time of action and possible side effects.

Description of the Patient Safety Practice

The handbook has been drafted by the Committee for infection control of the ASL Roma B (Local Health Authority) and describes the general principles of antisepsis and disinfection. The objectives of this handbook are the following: - to inform about the proper methods of disinfection/ antisepsis - to align knowledge, behaviours and procedures among healthcare workers, - to provide information about products that are safe for both workers and patients, with no commercial interest Furthermore, it includes the list of disinfectant products and antiseptics, the factors that can influence their action, their use, consumption of alcohol based hand rub, decontamination of medical supplies, management of equipment and instruments.
