Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice
The practice herein described aims to combine scientific and methodological reference with operational indications in order to work towards continuous quality improvement. Therefore, we have been participating in a project aiming at surgical site infections surveillance in arthroplasty, which allowed to set an improvement pathway for surgical site infections prevention. Thanks to the participation in this project, we identified areas for improvement in antibiotic prophylaxis.

Description of the Patient Safety Practice
'An ad hoc working group was set up to draft a proposal for evidence-based guidelines to rationalize the use of antibiotics in surgical prophylaxis. Once the guidelines were approved, a checklist was developed to monitor their implementation. A sample of medical records are assessed every month. Following the implementation of the guidelines, the prolonged prophylaxis of antibiotics was no longer practiced. Furthermore there was a reduction in the use of non-recommended molecules. There are still errors related to administration timing, antibiotic dosage and use of a short term prophylaxis for intervention where it is not recommended.
A cost-benefit analysis of the use of antibiotics before and after the review of the guidelines and training activities is in progress. The antibiotics consumption data are verified by the Department of Pharmacy and transferred to the Medical Department . These data are compared with the findings ofproper application contained in the Guidelines.
